How to Refill and Use a Cocktail Torch Safely

Before you fill

The Parlor Ember torch ships without fuel. That is normal. Use standard premium butane intended for refillable culinary torches, and follow the instructions printed on the torch and fuel canister.

Check the torch before every refill. Do not use it if the nozzle, ignition control, fuel valve, or body appears damaged. Keep the flame control closed before adding fuel.

Refill away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, hot surfaces, and operating appliances. Choose a cool, well-ventilated location. Keep children and pets out of the area.

Fill without rushing

Confirm that the butane nozzle fits the torch’s refill valve. Do not force a mismatched adapter. Hold the torch and fuel canister in the orientation required by their instructions.

1. Close the torch valve and make sure the ignition is off.
2. Press the fuel nozzle into the refill valve for the recommended interval.
3. Stop if fuel sprays, leaks, or collects on the torch.
4. Move the fuel canister away and let the torch rest before testing it.

Check for a leak before lighting

A strong butane odor, hissing, visible damage, or persistent frost around the valve can signal a problem. Do not ignite the torch. Move away from ignition sources and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Never test for a leak with a flame. Do not modify the valve, puncture the fuel canister, or use improvised fuel containers.

Light at the lowest useful setting

Place the cocktail on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Point the torch away from your face, hands, clothing, bottles, and other people.

Start with a controlled flame. Aim it at the wood chips in the steel screen, not at the Sapele wood body or the glass. Stop the flame as soon as the chips produce steady smoke.

Never leave an open flame unattended. Do not use the torch beneath cabinets, near curtains, or directly below a smoke detector.

Cool and store

The torch nozzle and smoker screen remain hot after the flame is off. Let both cool fully before touching, cleaning, or returning them to the carbonized wood presentation case.

Store butane in accordance with its label and local requirements. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping portable fuel containers in cool, well-ventilated areas and away from ignition sources.

If a torch or fuel canister is recalled, damaged, leaking, or behaving unpredictably, stop using it. Follow the manufacturer’s disposal or return instructions.
